Portland is getting a lot of praise from young urbanites seeking a creative, hip, affordable city. It’s got a flat, bike-friendly terrain and efficient mass transit, and a buzzing music and art scene that the New York Times writes about once a month (or so it seems). The food and coffee are good too.
Masses of kids with liberal arts degrees are moving there, and probably making your coffee or serving your beer, since there aren’t enough companies there to provide work for kids with degrees in Russian literature. But that’s okay, because their band is better than yours.
A Portland ad agency kicked off a series of videos to illustrate this point.
I recommend this stellar mix put together by the Mondo Boys, which I found via Aquarium Drunkard, one of my favorite music blogs. Download the MP3 from their site.

Maybe it’s because I’m an expectant father, but it seems like everything regarding babies is grabbing my attention. All that aside, this is an interesting video, full of cuteness. Note how the baby’s outfits change on the holidays.
Ellen and I were having a picnic at Gasworks Park when we noticed a group of people rehearsing some sort of dance. The lead dancers were wearing masks and twirling umbrellas. Video to follow!
I’ve been impressed with the promotional buildup that Grizzly Bear has been working in advance of their new album, Veckatimest. They’ve released a series of MP3s to blogs, had stints on Jools Holland and David Letterman, and now, this video. I’m sure the album will be a success; I can’t wait to get my copy on Tuesday.
