I don’t think I was alone in 2009 feeling some disillusionment with our country and our leaders. After 2008’s unprecedented election and 2009’s emotional inauguration of Obama, I felt like we would finally see some progress in Washington DC. As the year played out, it seemed like we were in a stalemate like never before.
After last week’s eloquent and hopeful State of the Union, I was reminded that maybe things CAN change. Last Friday, two days after the STOU, Obama addressed the GOP members of the House, and it seemed like we may be headed toward some sort of reasonable agreement that both sides will have to work together to make things happen. This was the most refreshing thing I’ve seen happen since Obama took office. Kudos to both sides.
As news broke this morning about McCain’s statement about delaying this Friday’s debate, I wanted it to be not true.
I’ve been suffering through an endless stream of campaign BS this past month, and just wanted to see/hear some head-to-head debate action.
I started thinking about what Obama would do, and how disappointed I (and everyone else) would be to postpone the first debate. Maybe he would go along with it. After all, my initial reaction was that McCain did have a point–the economic situation is a very big deal right now.
As the next few hours went by, it was clear that McCain’s call was a serious backfire.
Both candidates have been out on the campaign trail for 1.5 years, and there’s no doubt they’ve missed their fair share of deliberation during this time. We are 40 days away from the election, and now is when McCain wants to get back to Washington to do some work?
It’s clearly a political move on McCain’s part, and one that backfired horribly. Now, instead of looking like the noble, hardworking man of the people, he’s looking like a scared kid afraid of the new, smarter kid in town.
Meanwhile, Obama looks more and more presidential by forging on in tough times, claiming to pull double duty as senator and presidential candidate.
I’ll be watching as this all unfolds. Will McCain show up? He claims he won’t be there, but his camp has to know that would do nothing but hurt him. Badly.
